Collage, lettering, typography. Jatoichi's workshop
L'atelier de JZatoichi

A space at home where I test things between graphic design and manual creation.

Atelier
JZatoichi travaille dans son studio

I create original, handmade works. Each piece is unique — no printing, no reproduction.
Chaque pièce est unique — pas de tirage, pas de reproduction.

Right now, I'm mainly showing formats A4 and A3, but my work extends to other formats and mediums — large-format papers, mixed media, unconventional surfaces. What you find on my site is a representative selection of a larger practice, in constant evolution.

The materials I use: recovered paper, project scraps, inks, sprays, letterpress prints, cut lettering. I build the compositions by superimpositions, cuts, tears, overlays.

My work explores the border between chaos and structure : where the graphic form meets the accident of material, where the rigor of design meets the energy of the gesture.

What I do

trobooo

I create original, handmade works.

My practice covers sticking, the Mixed Media And the paintwork — mediums that I often work in combination rather than in opposition. Collage remains the core of my current research, but at the same time I am developing a work on canvas and on painted supports, in the continuity of the same obsessions: typography, urban culture, tension between structure and accident.

Right now, I'm mainly showing formats A4 and A3 — but my work extends to other formats and other supports, in constant evolution. What you find in this store is a representative selection of a wider practice. The materials I use depending on the piece: recovered papers, project scraps, inks, sprays, acrylic, acrylic, letterpress prints, cut lettering.

I build compositions by layering, cutting, tearing, overlaying—whether it's paper or canvas. I am not trying to erase the traces of work: the edges, the repentances, the irregularities are part of the room.My work explores the border between chaos and structure : where the graphic form meets the accident of material, where the rigor of design meets the energy of the gesture.

How I create an artwork

I work by series and research periods — Blue Period, Red Period, Color Period, Black & White — each carried by a specific chromatic or gestural logic. It is not a series in the decorative sense of the term: it is a working environment that allows me to go to the bottom of a direction before changing it.Collage is a medium of construction by fragments.

I start with existing materials — printed papers, typography, scraps from graphic projects, collected textures — that I cut, assemble, cover, reveal. The final surface is the result of several layers of decisions and accidents.

What I am borrowing from urban culture

I grew up in a visual universe shaped by graffiti, wild billboards, and street typography. This visual language — fragmented lettering, layered layers, textures damaged by time — is the raw material for my work.
It is not a question of representing the street, but of adopting its logic: accumulation, permanent transformation, the coexistence of different registers on the same surface.

Exhibitions and public presence

for sureeee

Layup — Toulouse (May — July 2025)

I was selected for Layup, a major street art exhibition in Toulouse, with a series of 14 abstract collages created under the name JZatoichi. Lettering, tagging, pasted paper, spray, typographic fragmentation.

It was also during the creator market organized in parallel that my first works were acquired directly by the public — an important validation of the readability of this work outside the studio context.

The exhibition brought together French and international artists including Miss Van, Fuzi, Rero, Stéphane Carricondo, Mambo, and around thirty other figures of contemporary urban art.
